Banasurasagar dam is a must visit place if you are in a trip to wayanad. Banasura Sagar Dam which is a part of Indian Banasurasagar Project is the biggest earth dam in India. The Dam is build across Karamanathodu tributary of the Kabini River., The main objective of this project is to support the Kakkayam Hydro electric Power plant. Banasurasagar Dam provides water for irrigation and is the source of drinking water for the region when shortage arises in some seasons. The project was started in the year 1979 consisting of a canal and a Dam.
This place is famous for its spectacular scenic beauty. When the reservoir submerged the surrounding areas a number of islands came into existence. Banasura Hills along with these Islands provides us an awesome view. A small children’s park is also there near the Dam. Speed boats are arranged in the Dam which facilitates boating through the islands.

Banasurasagar Dam is situated in wayanad district in Kerala, as rail is not there in the district the nearest railway station is Kannur Rail way station. Dam is about 21 Km from the Kalpetta town
